It’s been a busy year at Volk Media Design and hard to find time to update the website. We recently completed two videos on Team Training for Dana Farber Cancer Institute that showcased the value of coordinated care plans and communication to both patients and staff.
For clients, CLTC, we created a series of six dynamic video presentations that introduced clients to the key concepts in long-term care planning.
A joint project for Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center & Brigham and Womens Hospital demonstrates the value of Tai Chi for people with Parkinson’s disease.
Again this year, our videos for St. Francis House and the MGH Institute of Health Professions were the lynchpins of each organization’s annual Fund Raising Gala event.
Recent scripts for clients covered such diverse topics as a seven-module, hands-on mechanics manual for installing soda fountain machines, the Legend of the Lost Continent of Atlantis, the early history of Santa Barbara, CA, corporate humor, and financial services compliance.
Last Fall, we completed a months-long project for Liberty Mutual that featured their medical director talking about healthy lifestyle issues.
In music, Andy Volk’s upcoming stories in The Fretboard Journal will profile Los Angeles guitar maker Bill Asher and jazz guitarist George Barnes whose daughter has created a legacy collection of long out-of-print recordings, photographs, and teaching methods.

• Aspergers film in NY Times

Andy Volk produced and directed a video last December for Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Ctr.'s Neurology Department about the challenges and solutions of driving with Aspergers Syndrome. This week, the video was mentioned in the NY Times article on that issue. The link to the video on the BI site is in the middle of the article

Last evening, Boston Mayor Tom Menino and 450 guests viewed the fundraising video for St. Francis House produced and directed by Andy Volk and shot and edited by Scott Stephenson. The program told the story of Jon, a former Marine guard at ground zero who overcame a traumatic childhood of abuse and neglect, substance abuse, and homelessness to become a college student at The Ben Franklin Institute and a member of the National Honor Society thanks to the wide range of support services he received at St. Francis.

• MGH Institute Gala Video

Andy Volk (Producer/Director) & Scott Stephenson (Videographer/Editor) created the keynote video for MGH Institute of Health Profession’s Scholarship Gala, held on Oct 24th at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts’ spectacular glass courtyard at the new American Wing.
MGH Institute trains nurses, physical therapists and speech-language pathologists; people who will change the face of healthcare. Our video highlighted three students who are already making the world a better place for patients.

• Three-Camera Talk Show

Volk Media Returned to our live television roots this Summer to write, produce, and edit a compliance talk show program for the employees of a Boston-based financial services company. The program marked the swan song for the Christian Science Center’s television studio, a long-time cornerstone of the Boston production community.

It was a busy Spring for Volk Media Design. Our projects included a series of promo videos about resort destinations in Alaska and California, scripts that explored all-time great partnerships in music, sports and military history as well as the role of a great orchestra conductor in shaping a creative and memorable performance.
We traveled to Memphis to produce and direct a profile about a client’s leading salesperson and, here in Boston, produced and directed a video that compared the challenges of the Boston Marathon to those faced daily in the financial services industry.
New projects exploring apology and disclosure in medical error and regulatory compliance in the financial industry are now in production.

My article on buying a Weissenborn-Style Guitar appeared in the February, 2011 issue of Acoustic Guitar Magazine. Although he was not the first to build a flattop guitar specifically designed for lap playing, Los Angeles–based luthier Hermann Weissenborn refined the concept in the 1920s. His unique integration of a hollow neck with an elongated body yielded responsiveness, sustain, and a glossy, shimmering tone that many aficionados describe in almost metaphysical terms, and original Weissenborns now command eye-popping prices.

My article on Charles “Skipp” Pitts is now out in the Fall 2010 issue of The Fretboard Journal. Skipp played the iconic wah wah pedal guitar riff that propelled Isaac Hayes’ “Theme From Shaft” to the top of the charts back in the 1970s.
